Sarynamak Fm

Period:
Jurassic

Age Interval:
Kimmeridgian-Tithonian (J3 sn), D1

Province:
SW Tajik

Type Locality and Naming

It was allocated in the Darvaz district in 1938 by N. P. Yermakov under the name "gypsum-bearing". Its own geographical name was proposed by N. G. Vlasov (1961).

Synonym: Sarynamakska suite, сарынамакская свита

Reference section:

Lithology and Thickness

In the Darvaz district, the Sarynamak Fm (сарынамакская свита) is composed of interbedded reddish-brown clays, siltstones, and sandstones, in which there are rare layers of gray clays and gray fine-grained quartz sandstones. Their thickness in the Vasmykukh ridge is 190 m, in the valley of Obiniou about 900 m. In the suite, there are horizons and lenses of gray gypsumy clays and gypsums of 3- 35 m thickness, and in some places, small lenses of rock salt (1.5-5.7 m). Near the village Tovosangi in the interfluve of the Zarbuz-Gring rivers, in the Sarynamakska suite, bodies of plagioclase porphyrites (with plagioclases and clinohedrite in the matrix) and their tuffs and tuff sandstones of 50-100 m thickness (Vlasov, 1961) were found. Near the village Shogon, the suite is composed of gypsums with dolomite layers of 635 m thickness (Luchnikov, 1973).

Lithology Pattern:
Clayey sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The Sarynamak Fm conformably overlies the Zarbuz Fm (зарбузской свите)

Upper contact

It is conformably overlain by red-colored deposits of the Karabyl Fm (карабильской Свиты).

Regional extent

This is found in the Zaalaisky and Darvaz districts.

Fossils

In the considered suite, spores and pollen of the Upper Jurassic type Coniopteris, Cycadaceae, Ginkgo were found.

Age

On this basis and by its position in the section, the Sarynamakska suite is attributed to the Upper Jurassic. V. S. Luchnikov (1972,1973) considers this suite conditionally Kimmeridgian-Tithonian, since he refers the older Zarbuz suite (зарбузскую сэиту) to the Callovian-Oxfordian stages. A similar supposition was made at the Tashkent conference (Decisions..., 1959). Previously, the age of the suite was considered as Late Jurassic, more precisely undefined (Chikhachev et al., 1941; Geol. USSR, vol. 24, 1959).
